Heya, my name is Áine and I’m an Irish nurse working in Australia. I normally work in general surgical and medical wards so there’s a lot to see.
What made you want to nurse in Australia? And are you enjoying it?
For me, I have always wanted to travel and once I had my degree and a bit of experience behind me I wanted to set off. Australia was an easy one to choose. There is so much to see and do here, lots to check off the bucket list, the weather of course was a big factor coming from Ireland and getting to experience working as a nurse here.
Where have you chosen to live? And where are some of your favourite places in Australia to visit?
I always had my heart set on coming to Brisbane, I thought it would be an ideal place to set myself up and start out working with my agency. Brisbane is situated in an ideal location in my opinion, near enough to both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine coast which have some of the most amazing beaches I have ever seen. I still haven’t seen all of what I would like to see, but so far my favourite place would have to be Noosa – as well as Rainbow Beach with its multicoloured sands, and Double Island point. I could go on and on about all the beautiful places there is!
What are some pro’s and con’s about working as an agency nurse?
Agency working is fantastic, but as much as I would love to glamorise how wonderful agency nursing is, there are also some con’s. For me the pro’s are the flexibility, the money, and the different areas you can experience. You have the choice of when you want to work – but with that choice comes the issue of the availability of work. Some weeks, work is abundant and other weeks it’s sparse, but once you have an open mind to that, you’ll be fine. It took me some time to adjust I’ll be honest. I joined two agencies so that I would have more options. Of course, a big pro is the money that you get for agency nursing – but you will work hard for that cash. For me, I had one full year of experience before coming here, I think no matter where you go or what your experience is, you will learn something new every day. I have learnt so much about myself as a nurse, and for me that is so important.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to someone thinking about nursing in Australia, what would it be?
My advice…. Just go for it! There is no way you will ever regret coming here to work as a nurse. It opens your eyes to a different world and it will help you grow as a person and a nurse. AND you get to see some of the most amazing places in the world. It is the best decision I have ever made!
